Los primeros pasos.

El arquitecto Alfredo Arribas inicia, en el 2001, un proyecto en el Priorato, entre Ballmunt, el Molar y el Lloar, el proyecto de Portal del Montsant, recuperando bancales y laderas abandonados, trabajando con las variedades principales autóctonas del territorio: la garnacha y la cariñena. Trabajando con diversidad de variedades de uvas y clones, perfilando un modelo avanzado de viticultura orgánica. Todo ello enmarcado en un espléndido paisaje en el que se integra respetuosamente el vanguardista edificio que aloja la bodega. La curiosidad por descubrir el potencial de los vinos de la vecina DO Montsant, le anima a trabajar en paralelo realizando un primer vino en 2004 -excelente añada- seleccionando uva, particularmente cariñenas viejas, de la zona del Masroig. El magnífico resultado obtenido por Santbru 2004 reafirma el nuevo proyecto. En esta bodega destaca el trabajo con las variedades históricas de la zona: garnacha y sobre todo cariñena, uva que predomina en el suroeste de la Denominación de Origen. Los vinos son finos, fragantes, elegantes y toman su nombre -Santbru y Brunus- del fundador (San Bruno de Colonia) de la orden monástica de los cartujos, impulsores de la cultura y cultivo de la vid. Con Portal del Montsant, Alfredo Arribas pretende remontar a los orígenes, reinventar una historia que en realidad nunca existió como tal -dada la corta existencia de la DO- en la búsqueda de una tipicidad, de un cierto corte clásico y diferenciado a la vez. Se elaboran dos familias de vinos: Santbru, vinos enraizados en la tradición y en la identidad del Montsant a través de los paisajes de sus viñas viejas; y Brunus, vinos que simbolizan nuevas direcciones en la interpretación de la D.O. Montsant. Portal del Montsant ha reunido en estos años una representativa amalgama de viñedos propios o arrendados, en función de la mejor combinación de suelos, altitudes y orientaciones. A los originales tintos, de base cariñena, se han ido incorporando año a año vinos blancos de garnacha, sorprendentes por su frescor y un rosado que a día de hoy ya es mítico.

Año de la creación de la bodega.

El 2003 se fundó la bodega de Portal del Montsant, ubicada en la antigua cooperativa de Marcà, un edificio dedicado a la elaboración de vinos des de los inicios del siglo pasado. Esta emergente bodega del Montsant destaca por su trabajo con las variedades históricas de la zona: garnacha y cariñena. Los vinos sutiles, fragantes y complejos toman el nombre de su fundador del orden monástico de los monjes cartujanos, Sant Bruno de Colonia, presentes en la comarca del Priorato desde 1194 e impulsores del cultivo del viñedo. Pequeños trozos, crus, de gran calidad y con variedades de suelo (arcillosos, calcáreos y arenosos), de orientaciones y latitudes diferentes, configuran una selección rica en diversidad y personalidad de viñedos únicos, mayoritariamente cariñenas viejas, de muy baja producción, cerca de 30 ha en conjunto. La edad del viñedo supera habitualmente los 60 años, conducidas en vaso, con una densidad de plantación alta de más de 4500 cepas/Ha. La climatología de la zona (Masroig, el Molar, La Figuera, Mar-çà) es fundamentalmente mediterránea, con alguna característica continental en los viñedos situados más al norte y a más altura de la DO (700-800 metros) como Cornudella.
