Español [ ES ]Esta es una bodega que desde Alfaro, en la mediterránea Rioja oriental, contempla una de las últimas estribaciones del Sistema Ibérico, la agreste y fresca sierra de Yerga. En su ladera, formada por coluvios de sedimentación de las cumbres, se extiende La Montesa, viñedo de garnacha por excelencia. Arraigo y tradición vitícola sobre sus suelos de arcilla y de carbonato cálcico, donde afloran también los cantos rodados incluso de origen volcánico. Álvaro Palacios, trabaja en el viñedo familiar para ofrecernos vinos comprometidos con su origen, hoy en día moldeados por una pasión renovada. Fundada en 1945, es el germen de una saga de elaboradores que ha traspasado las fronteras de Rioja (Álvaro Palacios, Priorat y Bierzo junto a su sobrino Ricardo Pérez; y Rafael Palacios en el campo de los vinos blancos en Valdeorras). Palacios Remondo siempre ha sido uno de los elaboradores de referencia en la a menudo denostada Rioja Baja, más asociada a las grandes producciones que a las grandes marcas de calidad. Por eso no es extraño que Álvaro Palacios intentara acuñar el nombre menos peyorativo de Rioja Oriental que ha prosperado finalmente dentro del Reglamento.
Desde que el famoso enólogo español se hiciera con la bodega familiar, su visión de esta parte de Rioja se podría resumir en dos palabras: garnacha y altura. De hecho, la gran joya de la bodega es la magnífica finca La Montesa, que se alza en las faldas del Monte Yerga. En esta ubicación, buscando las orientaciones adecuadas y apoyándose en la variedad natural de Rioja Baja, la garnacha, se consiguen vinos muy diferenciados del resto de la denominación, con una carga aromática y una potencia balsámica que aportan buenas dosis de frescura. Gran conocedor de la variedad por su trabajo en Priorat, Álvaro ha hecho que ésta se convierta en la gran protagonista de las elaboraciones de la casa. Así ocurre en La Montesa, unas 650.000 botellas y en Propiedad, unas 30.000 botellas, donde apenas queda sitio para muy pequeños porcentajes de variedades minoritarias como garnacha gris, tinto velasco, graciano o bobal. También ha aplicado en Rioja la estrategia de lanzar un tinto top de un viñedo muy singular y precio elevado. Quiñón de Valmira, con poco más de 3.000 botellas, procede de un paraje de tres hectáreas plantado en vaso en 1985 que se distingue por la afloración de horizontes de carbonato cálcico a 20 centímetros de la superficie. Es también garnacha con muy pequeños porcentajes de variedades minoritarias y trabajada en foudre y bocoy. Ofrece un perfil aéreo y delicado, con notas florales y cítricas pero perfil muy sápido en boca. La bodega también elabora Plácet de Valtomelloso, unas 18.000 botellas, un blanco de viura que fue una creación de Rafael Palacios durante los años que estuvo al frente de las labores enológicas. Entre las novedades que ha introducido recientemente Álvaro Palacios destacan la elaboración en foudres de 2.000 litros, el cambio a botella borgoña desde la cosecha 2016 y la inclusión del sello ecológico desde la añada 2017.
