Historia.

Gaja es un productor italiano de vino de la región de Piemonte, en el distrito de Langhe que se dedica principalmente a la producción de una serie de vinos de Barbaresco y Barolo. El propietario de Gaja, el Sr. Angelo Gaja, está acreditado por el desarrollo de técnicas que han revolucionado la elaboración del vino en Italia. La familia Gaja se estableció en la región del Piamonte, en el noroeste de Italia, a mediados del siglo XVII. Cuatro generaciones de esta familia han venido produciendo vinos en las colinas Langhe del Piamonte desde 1859. Después de sus estudios en Alba, Montpellier y Bourgogne en 1961 donde había aprendido y realizado múltiples prácticas profesionales, sobre las diferentes formas del cuidado de las viñas y la vinificación. Angelo Gaja aplicó cambios revolucionarios en el Piamonte. En su momento dio lugar a una controversia pero hoy sabemos que su aportación fue fundamental. Angelo Gaja, tuvo el valor de romper con los métodos de elaboración que databan de 1850. Estas técnicas exigían recolección tardía, larga extracción y un envejecimiento casi interminable en viejas cubas de crianza. Eran unos vinos muy tánicos pero a menudo convertidos en muy secos a base de esperar mucho tiempo a que llegara una maduración que jamás llegaba. En 1994, la familia adquirió su primera propiedad en la Tosacana, Pieve di Santa Restituta en Montalcino, y en 1996 se hizo con una segunda propiedad también en la Toscana, Ca'Marcanda situada en el distrito de Bolgheri. Hoy, Angelo Gaja ha pasado las tareas diarias a sus hijas Gaia y Rossana Gaja aunque todavía no ha tomado la decisión de retirarse del todo. La bodega cuenta con 102 hectáreas de viñedo en los distritos de Barbaresco y Barolo.

Producción.

Gaja registra una producción anual de 350.000 botellas de 18 vinos diferentes de los viñedos de Piamonte en la zona de Barbaresco, Barolo y la zona de La Morra, en Montalcino y Bolgheri sobre la superficie total de 237 hectáreas de tierra. Angelo Gaja decidió elaborar unos vinos tintos fermentados en cubas de acero inoxidable con control de temperatura, bien macerados, y remontados sólo durante dos semanas. Son también suavizados por una limpia fermentación maloláctica, envejecidos en barricas nuevas de roble francés durante seis meses y madurados en cubas de viejo roble de Eslovenia durante los doce meses suplementarios que exige la reglamentación. Los criterios de calidad de Angelo Gaja son muy estrictos, por primera vez desde los tiempos de la filoxera, un cosechero de Barbaresco limitó las podas de sus viñedos a 8 yemas por cepa – en lugar de las 24 habituales – con toda la fuerza concentrada en tan pocos racimos que los vinos alcanzaron una increíble intensidad.
